TapeTalk
From SPARK
Description
- The "TapeTalk 2" is a mono player that is powered by turning a handle. It is designed for use in locations where there are no batteries or other sources of power. However, it has a socket for connection to an external power source of 6-volt DC from an AC adapter. A 6-volt solar panel can also power it.
- The crank handle is connected via gears to a generator, which supplies electrical power to operate the machine. The output is regulated so the machine plays at the correct speed regardless of how fast the handle is cranked provided it is above a minimum level.
- TapeTalk 2 players are built of tough ABS plastic and metal. They have a light beige top and a dark green base. Reliability and serviceability are high priorities in the design and manufacture of these players. They are manufactured in China. Parts are available at reasonable prices.
- The rugged TapeTalk player is engineered to survive a variety of extreme climates and operate in areas where users have no experience with machines and little opportunity to get repairs.
Considerations
- • Cassettes are readily available, including prerecorded cassettes in many languages.
Evaluation
- Advantages
- • Hand crank, no batteries needed. (Can use 6-volt DC/solar panel.)
- • Simple, lightweight and compact.
- Disadvantages
- • Hand crank handle can break if abused (replacements available).
- • Any machine with mechanical parts is more likely to need repairs. It would be best if users are shown how to change belts and clean the playback head.
- There are few spare parts available for the machine. Replacement hand cranks are available (see below). Replacement belts should be available via the Internet if you specify the diameter of the belt. Otherwise, you will need to buy an extra one or two tape players for spare parts.
Where to Obtain
Order From
- • Vernacular Media Services (VMS). The price as of July, 2007 was $26 each, $20 if ordered in quantities of 10 or more.

- • Replacement cranks are available through Audio Scripture Ministries.
