What I see Carol saying in this story is that she recognized a major key factor of significance in this interaction. It was that she had a highly motivated, intelligent individual with a clear vision of how to proceed and an apparently high level of acceptance in the target community standing right next to her. The reasonable response was exactly what she did: let this man "go for it" with his ideas and approach (and then see what happens). Clearly this worked out well and the story speaks for itself in that regard
