Description

The PG58 is a good value for an acceptable microphone for voice and general use. It comes with a choice of XLR or ¼” cable. The PG58 only comes with a switch. (This compares with the more expensive SM58, which comes with or without a switch, either way without cables.)

Considerations

There may be a need for a decent quality microphone that does not cost as much as a "top of the line" unit.

Evaluation

We used the more expensive SM58 as the base comparative microphone, as there are many similarities between it and the PG58. By simple voice testing into Adobe Audition, the wave patterns are very much alike. In listening to the result, the SM58 seems to have better “presence”; however, the PG58 comes through very well.
Even in the analysis of wave files created with pink, white, and brown noise, there is not anything definitive to indicate that the quality of the SM58 might be better than the PG58. I am sure that the real testing will come on the field, both in the recorded results and in the endurance and longevity of the units.
Reviews on the Internet give me the impression that PG58 picks up the most sound from in front of the microphone and some sound from the sides; whereas SM58 is somewhat more unidirectional. This microphone operates over a temperature range of 29 to 57 degrees Celsius (20 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit), and at a relative humidity of 0 to 95%.
