Sharing Jesus Without Fear
From SPARK
Brief Summary
Five key questions to ask “without fear" when sharing Jesus to a lost person.
Introduction
Recently I learned a very natural way to share Jesus to a lost person “without fear.” First, I ask five questions to see where God is working in their lives. Second, I allow the Holy Spirit to speak to them in His Word. Opening His Word, I ask, “What does this verse say to you?” Third, after quietly listening to their answers, I close with key questions. If they say they want to invite Jesus into their heart I pray with them.
Key Factors
- A common bond formed because both were grieving the loss of a child.
- A prayer partner prayed for both during the conversation.
- Listening quietly, without making judgemental comments as she answered the questions, developed trust.
- The person reached was able to read and apply the verses to her life.
What Was Done
In a small New Testament, I underlined verses of Scripture with yellow. I chose verses I felt would lead someone to Christ. In the top margins above the underlined Scriptures, I wrote the next verse upside down. I did this so I could see it while a person read the passage. This would help me to know where to go next.
Then I asked God to lead me to a lost person. Later, coming home from my granddaughter’s funeral, I met Gina in an airport. She was grieving the loss of a child too, so a bond was formed. I asked her the five questions, listening carefully to her responses.
She believed in God, Jesus and heaven. She felt she would go to heaven because she was a good person. She said she would want to know if what she believed wasn’t true. Because she was so open I went to the second step, reading God’s Word.
She accepted my invitation to read aloud the Scriptures I underlined. She told me what they meant to her. I began with Ephesians 2: 8, 9 because she was trusting good works to get to heaven. After reading it aloud she said, “If this is true, then I’m in trouble.” As she read the other underlined verses she often said she was in trouble. The Holy Spirit was truly working in her heart. She became eager to pray with me and ask Jesus to forgive her for her sins.
It was such a joy to hear her trust in Jesus for salvation. My husband then offered her a New Testament titled “How to Find God.” After reading the section on how to find God she said to me happily, “This really makes sense!”
Results
Years later our friendship, and her faith, continues to grow. She calls us her spiritual parents. She asks us for help in choosing a church, and how to share her faith with her family and friends. I have urged her to read William Fays book, Share Jesus Without Fear.
Because this method worked for me, I keep the questions in my wallet. On the front of a small card I put the five questions. On the back I list the Scriptures for people to read aloud. I give these to other Christians and encourage them to share Jesus without fear.
