One-sentence summary

Five-part flipchart children's story about an African girl.

Description

A New Life For Iromo is about an African girl who lives in difficult conditions. This burdens her parents. Because she is sick, her parents take her to the local shaman. He makes her sicker. When Iromo's father hears about a far-away place with strong medicine, he takes her there. At the mission station, the lady doctor treats Iromo with medicine. The treatments take many days. During this time, Iromo learns that God loves her. She learns that God sent Jesus to save her from sin. Iromo decides to believe in Jesus.

She asked her parents to allow her to return to school at the mission station. They let her go. She studies and learns to read and write. She studies the Bible and becomes a church member. When she becomes an adult she meets a Christian man and they marry. Her husband becomes an African evangelist in Iromo's village.

The five chapters are titled:

  • A Live Scarecrow
  • The Witch Doctor Demands Payment
  • The Witch Doctor's Medicine
  • The Right Medicine
  • A New Life for Iromo

This book is 10" x 13". There are forty pages of pictures and eight pages of text to use with the pictures. Many pictures are black, white, and grey. Some have light yellow background. Pictures of the missionary doctor, the teacher, and Iromo show them dressed in orange.

Considerations

  • The large pictures are easy to understand.
  • The pictures show life in a part of the country of Sudan.
  • Children ages 7 - 12 will enjoy this story.

Limitations

  • A map of Sudan and the location of Iromo's village is not included.
  • Many of the pictures show only parts of a scene. Only the top half of people are shown. This will confuse children and adults who are not picture literate.
  • The tattoo marks on the women will need to be explained.

Guidelines for Use

  • Use in church, Sunday school, Bible clubs, and camps.
  • Record on audio cassette or CD. Use with the flipchart pictures.
  • Use as a radio drama.
