MPReach
From SPARK
MPReach sells small, low cost MP3 players and player/recorders. These can be used in language survey, teaching, and sending information, with or without Internet access. These players plug into the computer USB port. Audio files can be transferred to other devices to transmit information by hand.
Considerations
MP3 files can be uploaded to these units using USB. A USB connector is built into the end. This is similar to those on the popular storage and transfer units. Audio files can be changed to MP3 format. This requires Adobe Audition, Cool Edit, Audacity, or other editing programs. Some simple utilities may also be used. Headphones, ear buds, or maybe powered speakers are needed for listening.
For group listening, a short range FM transmitter can be used with this unit to broadcast the contents of the MP3 player to a radio or "boom box". Compression can be used to determine the best format and quality for a project.
One disadvantage is that any computer-literate person could upload his own files on the units. To discourage this, something like silicon glue can be used to seal the cap on the USB connection. (Do not use Super Glue.) This would allow reentry only with some work.
The player and the recorder have a USB extension cable, ear buds, and one AAA battery. The battery will last eight to ten hours.
The player-only version has on/off, volume control, and skips to past or previous file. The headphone connection is a 2.5 mm connector.
The recorder version has a built-in sensitive microphone. It is good for field recording such as language material. It records to .wav or ACT compression, but includes a CD with a player/conversion utility to wave files or mp3 files. The recorder has a small LCD screen that shows which file is playing, menu options, and control buttons. The included ear buds use a standard 3.5 mm jack. This permits the use of standard headphones. The recorder also has an instruction book and mini-CD with drivers and a player with conversion from ACT.
As of 2006, the player-only version cost about $25 with a 128MB capacity. The 256MB, 512MB, or 1GB sizes cost more. Prices will vary depending on the market for memory. The recorder version cost about $# The larger memory units cost more.
Two possible applications:
- The community development worker who wants to make an informational page (e.g., how to prevent disease) available.
- The VM specialist who wants a creative way of making text (e.g., Scripture, training, etc.) available in audio.
