Komposo
From SPARK
Brief Summary
Performance is memorable for singer/dancers and audience. Using a local form of dance-drama yielded some good lessons as well as good results.
Introduction
A local form of dance-drama among the Agutaynen in the Philippines is called the Komposo. It narrates a story, often about unrequited love between princes and princesses and such. It happens in a certain poetic form, with accompanying dance moves. There are typically twelve singer/dancers.
What was done
We used this form at Fiesta time to portray the life of Paul. The text was based on the book of Acts, which had recently been published.
Results
Reaction to the performance was enthusiastic, and I feel sure the singer/dancers learned a lot that they will remember about Paul.
I would do this again, but only under the following conditions:
- There would be opportunity for repeat performances.
- We could get a good video of it for sharing by that means.
I also realized that the “sponsor” for such a dance/drama also has to pay for costumes and meals for the performers.
