Introduction
The other day I had the opportunity to travel to a number of different villages and visit with Cakchiquel pastors who are involved in the Faith Comes By Hearing program. After they receive the New Testament cassettes they make a commitment to use them in their church at least a half an hour a week.People gather together to hear the Word of God. After the session they ask questions.
A Western Cakchiquel pastor told us that some months ago a 10-year-old boy came to one of the listening sessions, and accepted Jesus as his personal savior. After he went home his parents were quite disturbed. His father was an alcoholic and apparently his mother and the family suffered because of this. But the boy kept talking about what had happened to him at the listening session and kept going back.
The parents decided to go and see what was going on. They were deeply moved by what they heard and were under the conviction of the Holy Spirit. However, they did not return at that time to hear more. Not long after they attended the session, the boy's mother became deathly ill and was taken to the hospital, not expected to live. Apparently she lingered between life and death for some time. The father started drinking heavily and was unaware of all that was happening. But the mother started getting better and when the father saw her improvement, he began to become more aware. They both remembered some of the Word of God that they'd heard in the Faith Comes By Hearing listening session. After she was well enough to go home, they attended the next listening session and the entire family believed.
Results
Their neighbors were so moved by the change they had seen in the family that they began to ask questions. A number of families went with them to hear the Word of God. Four more families accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. All the families have been baptized except one. The pastor reports they are growing in the Lord and their lives are changing.
