Flipcharts have three simple components:

  • Easel or mechanism to hold a writing surface
  • Pad or writing surface
  • Writing instrument

Flipcharts may seem outmoded, however, they are an effective and inexpensive way to present information and easy to make.

Considerations

Strengths Limitations
• Keeps its sequence • Less durable
• Simple form• Limited group viewing
• No electronics• Lower interest than other media
• Suits home use
• Inexpensive
• Easy to make and handle
• Useful for live storytelling

Note:

  • Some training is needed to produce good quality flipcharts.
  • Some sort of protection from the elements is recommended (i.e. lamination, clear page covers)
  • Flipcharts are ideal for small to medium sized audiences and don't require electricity.

Guidelines for using flipcharts

Five tips for creating great flipcharts:

  1. Organize your materials. Know what important points need to be presented, and decide what thoughts and ideas you want to present to your audience. Make sure your flipchart is orderly and understandable by your audience.
  2. Use graphics, text, and a variety of layouts to achieve the desired results.
  3. Use a variety of colors. Color will help get their attention. Use a colored marker or labeler to make it even more attractive. Keep it simple by using only two or three colors.
  4. Keep the pages simple. Too much information can be a distraction. Each visual should make a single point. A flipchart is a visual aid to your presentation, not the message itself.
  5. Make letters bold and large. The recommended minimum height is 2 inches. Leave plenty of white space on each page. It must be readable by everyone in the audience.
