One-sentence summary
Children's story of the life of Hudon Taylor: founder of the China Inland Mission.
Description
This story is about Hudson Taylor's childhood and difficult teenage years, as well as his life as a well-known pioneer missionary. Children read about how he and his wife faced sickness, poverty, heartache and death. Yet they continued to trust God through all these experiences.
While living in China Hudson Taylor adapted the Chinese lifestyle. This made the other missionaries unhappy and unfriendly.
This is a story of romance and relationships. It shows what God can do through one person who serves Jesus in foreign lands.
Considerations
- The book uses personal writings of Hudson Taylor.
- There is some fiction included with his actual daily happenings. This makes the book difficult to follow.
- This book ends with 'Thinking further' questions to help children personalize what they have read.
Limitations
- The book will be difficult for children who do not live in the western world, to understand.
- The book is based on his letters and personal journals. It goes back and forth between the storyline and his letters and journals.
- The book skips large parts of Hudson Taylor's life. The part about his life is followed by a brief, unrelated modern missionary story.
- The final chapter skips from the year 1905 to the 1990's and a young woman missionary serving in China. This chapter also ends abruptly.
Guidelines for Use
- I cannot recommend this book for use with children in minority languages! Even as an adult I found it difficult to follow and not that interesting.
